STONIE MAKES IT A MOONPIE THREE-PEAT!
Matt Stonie made it three wins in a row at this event, by eating 73 MoonPies in eight minutes to claim the 2017 edition of the Bass Pro Shops World MoonPie Eating Championship. Three consecutive victories in an event is commonly referred to a three-peat, a conjunction of the words “three” and “repeat.” If one wins five in a row, and is looking to claim a sixth, you may say that they are looking to “repeat the three-peat.” After that, it gets confusing.
What is not confusing is that Matt Stonie is dominant in the MoonPie discipline. His success in this event—he is undefeated in the event’s lifespan—is no surprise: This is a speed and mouth-power exercise. Stonie’s quick hands and jaw strength were at full display here on this day. A surging Geoffrey Esper, fresh of a dominating win in the Pumpkin Pie discipline, could not catch Stonie. He lead early and never once looked back. Props to new MLE members Ivan Mendoza and Michael Whities for their podium placements; one imagines they will be a force come the 2018 eating season.

About MoonPie Chattanooga Bakery was founded in 1902 as a subsidiary of the Mountain City Flour Mill. A fifth generation, family-owned business, the company made nearly 100 snack cake and cookie items under the Lookout™ trademark, named after the popular residential and tourist community near Chattanooga, Lookout Mountain. In 1917, after a brainstorming conversation between a bakery salesman and some Appalachian coal miners, the MoonPie was born, and by the late 1930’s was the bakery’s #1 seller, a spot it still occupies today, with nearly 1 million MoonPies produced and shipped daily from Chattanooga. MoonPies are available in three sizes (Original, Double-Decker® and Mini) and seven flavors (Chocolate, Vanilla, Banana, Salted Caramel, Lemon, Orange & Strawberry). Brand distribution is national, with particular strength in the Southeast and Southwest. The brand can be found in Grocery, Mass, Club, Drug, Convenience, Vending, Foodservice and a number of specialty retail outlets including Bass Pro Shops and Cracker Barrel.
