SONYA THOMAS WINS ANOTHER ACME OYSTER TITLE WITH 41 DOZEN IN EIGHT MINS!
New Orleans, LA, was NOT the place to be this coming Sunday, May 31st, if you were an oyster. For everyone else, it was the epicenter of sport, as Major League Eater from near and far again descended on the New Orleans Oyster Festival with two things on their minds: Glory and money.
Prevailing on this day was Sonya "The Black Widow" Thomas, the greatest eater of the oyster in the history of the world. She ate 41 dozen oysters in eight minutes to claim the championship in this event she has made her own. (Some quick math. Forty-one dozen. So, 41 times 12, equals 492, times six is 2952, divided by three is 984, squared is 968,256, divided by 984, divided by two, of course, is 492. That's 492 oysters in eight minutes. Or 61.5 oysters a minute. Or 1,025 oysters a second.)
Sonya's hand speed remains the best in the business. And her manual dexterity is simply the first line of attack in an oyster-eating process that is the best in the business. Each twitch of muscle. Each pivot of the hips. Eat bite. Each swallow. They move in synchronicity. In a perfect symphony. If you've seen it, you know what I am talking about. If you have not, pfft—you're twisting my melon. Some things you simply have to behold. Fields of sunflowers. A wave crashing against a rock. Sonya eating oysters. That's about it.
Local hero Adrian Morgan tied for Ms Michelle less of Tucson, AZ—a place, to be fair, that is not know for its oysters or oyster-led cuisine—with 36 dozen. King Voodoo himself, aka Corey Fanguy, came fourth with 26 dozen. But this year's The Acme Oyster Eating World Championship belonged to one lady. Sonya Thomas. The Black Widow. The greatest. Hail to the queen.
