Kennebunkport, Maine, hosted the second annual World Lobster-Eating Festival on Saturday, August 13, 2005, The event-filled festival will feature a full day of Maine lobster competitions, live entertainment and affordable Maine Lobster concessions for families and individuals of all ages.
A highlight of the festival was the Fresh Main Lobster Co.’s World Lobster-Eating Championship, sanctioned by the International Federation of Competitive Eating (IFOCE). A field of both professional and local eaters will compete, assisted by expert lobster “crackers” who will support the eaters as caddies support golfers.
World champion lobster-eater Sonya Thomas broke her own world lobster-eating record, consuming 11.3 pounds of Maine lobster meat, the equivalent of 44 lobsters, in 12 minutes to win the World Lobster Eating Contest in Kennebunkport, Maine.
Crazy Legs Conti, who last year showed excellence in this discipline, placed second with 6.7 pounds, or 32 lobsters. Badlands Booker ate 5.1 pounds, or 25 lobsters, to place third.
For her win, Thomas retained the championship title and possession of “The Claw,” the coveted championship belt of lobster-eating supremacy.
