Joey Chestnut once again proved why he is the greatest eater on the planet when he broke his own record at the World Deep-Fried Asparagus Eating Championship. Chestnut ate 9 lbs 5.2 oz of friend asparagus spears in front of a capacity crowd raucously cheering on their homegrown hero.
The win was the fifth asparagus title for Chestnut in the contest's six-year history. His only loss coming in 2009 to #2-ranked Pat Bertoletti, the 2011 second place finisher (7 lbs 3.5 oz).
Impressing both the crowd and his fellow eaters, Matt "megatoad" Stonie surprised many in his first-ever MLE contest by taking third place after eating 6 lbs 12 oz. The San Jose native edged out #14-ranked Adrian Morgan by just 6 oz for the last payout.
