A slew of new eaters qualified for the Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July International Hot Dog Eating Contest over the long weekend. Rich LeFevre set a new Nevada record on Thursday, May 27, by consuming a personal best 26 hot dogs and buns in 12 minutes at the New York, New York Hotel & Casino. LeFevre, who qualified in Los Angeles, will represent California on July 4. The second place finisher in Las Vegas, newcomer Ron Koch, consumed 23 hot dogs and buns in his first outing and will represent Nevada on the Fourth.
On Saturday, Sonya Thomas won the Philly qualifier, consuming 26.5 hot dogs and buns in 12 minutes to top Bill Simmons, former world wing champion, who downed 18-plus hot dogs and buns in his first hot dog effort. Bob Shoudt placed third in this event, followed by Brian Subich. On Sunday, Eric Booker earned his spot in the big dance by eating 27 hot dogs and buns, winning the qualifier at Belmont Racetrack.
