Competitive Eating phenom Joey 'Jaws' Chestnut continued his extraordinary 2005 by setting a new world record of 32.5 grilled cheese sandwiches in 10 minutes today at the GoldenPalace.net World Grilled Cheese Eating Championship contest at the Arizona State Fair. Chestnut's momentus feat betters the previous record of 31, held by Eater X. Chestnut joins an elite field of gurgitators who have earned births in the GoldenPalace.net World Championship, including Sonya Thomas, Eater X, Badlands Booker, and Cookie Jarvis.
A date and location for the GoldenPalace.net World Championship could be announced as early as this week. $20,000 in prize money will be on the line. "Jaws Chestnut might have the greatest potential of any eater ever to come out of the American circuit," said IFOCE commissioner Charles Hardy, who flew out to Phoenix to witness the performance. "He has all the makings of a true athletic superstar." Finishing second was Andy Dickman, while in third was John Riddle.
