Commemorative Shirt to be Sold in Stores and Featured on Competitors
Major League Eating and Nathan's Famous have named Old Navy the official retailer for the 2010 Nathan's Famous Fourth of July International Hot Dog Eating Contest. As part of its sponsorship, Old Navy will design a new uniform shirt for competitors to wear during the annual event at Coney Island, and it will sell the shirt at Old Navy stores nationwide.
"The Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest has become an annual part of America's Independence day celebration," said Wayne Norbitz, President and COO of Nathan's Famous. "We are delighted to welcome Old Navy as the official retailer of the contest and we look forward to showcasing the new contest uniforms at Coney Island on July 4th."
Old Navy started selling the Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest t-shirt in 1,000 stores nationwide in June. The t-shirt features the revamped contest logo, designed by Old Navy.
The Nathan's Famous Fourth of July International Hot Dog Eating Contest is an ESPN-televised event held at the original Nathan's Famous in Coney Island at noon on July Fourth. The reigning and three-time champion is Joey Chestnut of San Jose, CA. In 2009, Chestnut consumed 68 Nathan's Famous Hot Dogs and Buns in 10 minutes to set a new world record.
"For years fans throughout the country have requested the t-shirts they see on stage in Coney Island," said MLE Chairman George Shea. "This is the opportunity fans have been waiting for."
