09-19-2009
The Notorious R.O.B.ert Shoudt is living up to his moniker lately after continuing his attack on the MLE September calendar. Shoudt entered the World Burrito Championship at the New Mexico State Fair Friday having won his last two events (Chili Spaghetti and ATL Krystal Qualifier) and the winning didn't stop there. Shoudt ate 33.5 4oz burritos in Albuquerque Friday afternoon to best a deep field and win $1,500 along with the World Burrito Eating Championship.
Robert then hopped a plane to Bossier City for the Harrah's LA Downs World Grits Eating Championship and beat, for the second straight time, a field that included the world's top two ranked eaters in Joey Chestnut and Pat Bertoletti. Shoudt downed an astounding 18.98 lbs of grits for the title and the first-place prize of $2,200.
Other top finishers from Friday's Burrito Championship include Hall Hunt in 2nd place w/30, rookie sensation Big Ben Monson in 3rd w/29.5 and Erik the Red Denmark taking 4th place w/26 burritos.
Saturday's Grits contest saw defending Champ Eater X finish 2nd w/17.6 lbs, top-ranked Joey Chestnut take 3rd w/15.85 lbs and a tie for 4th place between Hall Hunt and Pat Bertoletti w/15.5 lbs.
The weekend action continues with the final two Krystal Qualifiers in Nashville (Saturday at 2pm) and Knoxville (Sunday at 2pm). The weekend's Krystal hopefuls can breathe a little easier knowing that Shoudt won't be standing next to them at the table...
