Major League Eaters Gather in Buffalo for National Buffalo Wing Match

The National Buffalo Wing Festival on Labor Day weekend will host some of the World’s finest competitive eaters in the Buffalo Wing Fest World Buffalo Wing-Eating Championship and the Buffalo Wing Fest World Buffet Bowl-Eating Championship. The Major League Eaters of the IFOCE will seek more than $4,000 in cash over the two days.

“There is no competitive eating contest more elegant than the Buffalo Wing contest and no victory more important,” said George Shea, Chairman of the IFOCE. “The essence of the human struggle to survive is on display in Buffalo on Labor Day Weekend.”

Headlining the weekend’s events is Chip “Burger” Simpson, the seventh-ranked Major League Eater in the world. Simpson, a Pennsylvania native, is riding a wave of momentum heading into the contest. He recently captured the 2006 Midwest Regional Hot Dog Eating Championship and finished second in the International Pizza-Eating Championship. Seattle’s Erik “The Red” Denmark and Boston’s “Buffalo” Jim Reeves hope to upset Simpson in his quest to win the Buffalo Wing title.

The Buffalo Wing-Eating Championship, to be held on Saturday will precede Sunday’s Buffet Bowl-Eating Championship. Both events will begin at 5:00 p.m. from Dunn Tire Park in Buffalo, NY.

Major League Eating fans consider this to be one of the most anticipated contests on the IFOCE circuit, as last year’s contest was a memorable showdown between competitive eating’s greatest athletes. Eric “Badlands” Booker captured last year’s wing contest by consuming 137 Buffalo Wings, while Ed “Cookie” Jarvis was victorious in the Buffet Bowl. Both Booker and Jarvis have since retired from competitive eating, and fans are eager to find out who will fill in their shoes this year.

The International Federation of Competitive Eating (IFOCE), the governing body of all stomach-centric sports, conducts more than 100 events annually, including the Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July International Hot Dog Eating Contest in Coney Island, N.Y. The competitive eating community, which numbers more than 3,000 veteran and rookie athletes, travels the nation in search of top titles and the glory that they provide.
