GoldenPalace.net will hold three grilled cheese-eating contests – one of which will offer $100,000 to an amateur who can break the world grilled cheese-eating record -- on Saturday, June 10, in Las Vegas, Nevada as part of the Arena Football League ArenaBowl XX Weekend.
The three-contest steeplechase of grilled cheese sandwich eating, to take place at the Thomas & Mack Center, will include a contest for Las Vegas amateurs, a contest for IFOCE professional eaters and a one-on-one eating contest between top IFOCE eater Tim Janus and an AFL star.
The amateur contest will begin at 3:30 pm and is exclusively for Las Vegas residents who have never before competed in an eating contest. If one of the amateurs breaks the world record of 36.5 grilled cheese sandwiches in 10 minutes, that eater will receive a $100,000 prize (rules and restrictions apply).
The contest for IFOCE eating professionals, to be held at 3:30 pm, will feature $5,000 in prizes and the one-on-one contest will be held at 7 pm.
“This will go down in history as one of the greatest-ever gastronomic celebrations of competitive gluttony,” said GoldenPalace.net CEO Richard Rowe. “The IFOCE events are always a hit with fans and spectators and we know this one will be a winner as well. We wish all competitors the best of luck and we can’t wait to see what happens.”
Among the eating greats who are expected to compete in the professional contest are top-ranked Sonya Thomas of Virginia, Patrick Bertoletti of Illinois and Richard LeFevre of Las Vegas. Tim Janus holds the world record with 36.5 grilled cheese sandwiches in 10 minutes.
“The grilled cheese sandwich has been unjustly ignored in America,” said George Shea, chairman of the International Federation of Competitive Eating, which is sanctioning the event. “I believe this contest will highlight the grilled cheese’s position as one of history’s great sandwiches.”
