Florida's Jammin' Joe LaRue drew a record crowd to the World Sweet Corn Eating Championship today, and he did not disappoint. The top-ranked eater in Florida set a new sweet corn on the cob eating record by consuming 34 ears in 12 minutes. The previous record of 33 ½ ears was set in 2004 by legendary gurgitator Ed Cookie Jarvis.

In second place was Jay Smith with 30 ears and in third place was Atlanta’s Larry McNeil who downed 28 ears. The contest took place at the annual Sweet Corn Fiesta in West Palm Beach.

Those gathered in the large crowd were primarily locals who have been vocally supporting LaRue since he lost his Florida Hot Dog Title to New Yorker Crazy Legs Conti in a much analyzed overtime just two weeks ago. After that loss LaRue vowed to win at the Sweet Corn Fiesta. After the contest LaRue struck a somewhat satisfied, if not jaunty, pose.
