The 2005 Acme World Oyster Eating Championship will occur on Sunday, March 20th, and serve as the anchor event of the Grand Opening Celebration of Acme’s newest location at 3000 Veteran’s Blvd. in Metairie, Louisiana.

Known for elevating the celebrity of such eating stars as Crazy Legs Conti and Boyd Bulot, the Acme World Oyster Eating Championship attracts top gurgitators to New Orleans each year. In 2004, Sonya Thomas downed 36 dozen Louisiana Oysters in the ten minute event, doubling the existing record and beginning a year of dominance on the IFOCE circuit.

Perhaps because of its location, the oyster eating championship attracts many fans that travel to New Orleans each year to witness the event and take in some local flavor.

“My life would not be complete without this annual pilgrimage to the Crescent City,” said Dinshaw Goby, a New York City-based musician who attends the Acme event every year. “The galleries of the French Quarter, the historic tree-lined streets of the Garden District and the high-spirited oyster contest all combine for a memorable family experience.”

The event is expected to draw even bigger crowds this year due to the success of “Crazy Legs Conti, Zen and the Art of Competitive Eating,” a documentary film airing on A&E that uses the 2002 Acme World Oyster Eating Championship as a focus.

The contest is presented by Acme Oyster House, the Louisiana Seafood Promotion and Marketing Board, Tabasco Brands, Barq’s Root Beer, and Lea & Perrins. The IFOCE is handling registration and anyone interested in competing in the Acme World Oyster Eating Championship can email info@ifoce.com. An interesting article appeared recently.
