Major League Eating, the organization that governs all stomach-centric sport worldwide, has launched an initiative to advance American culture and the culinary arts by catalyzing a nationwide move from seven-layer dip to eight-layer dip.

MLE will establish an official eight layer in time for the big game on February 7, 2021, when it will host and sanction the DraftKings Big Game Snackdown, a multi-food, steeplechase eating contest that will feature, for the first time, eight-layer dip.

“Communications technology aside, our nation has endured three decades of stagnation without meaningful scientific or cultural innovation,” said Sam Barclay, Scientific Chair of MLE’s Research Division, who is leading the dip initiative. “Our acceptance of seven-layer dip, when eight-layer dip has been right there in front of us, is a glaring affront to American exceptionalism.”

Barclay said MLE was further troubled by wide-spread inconsistency in the accepted ingredients for multi-layer dips and that the organization would seek to resolve this disparity. To that end, MLE has launched a global survey to reach consensus on official ingredients. It has proposed a list of 16 possible ingredients that include hummus, black olives, cheddar cheese, shredded lettuce, kale, nougat, guacamole, taco-seasoned ground beef, bacon, refried beans, salsa, sour cream, tomatoes, crème fraîche, jalepeños and blue-cheese dressing.

“We invite all concerned citizens to weigh in on which layers should be certified as the standard for the party favorite,” Barclay said. “We hope to establish a dip that provides a compelling and satisfying eating experience that is built to endure.”

MLE’s Research Division considered focusing its efforts on a nine-layer dip to demonstrate America’s ability to make exponential progress, or even a 10-layer dip in an effort to atone for America’s failed attempt to adopt the metric system in the 1970s. However, MLE food scientists found that the additional layers complicated the creation process, leading to unacceptably thin layers that compromised the flavor profile of the dish.

The MLE survey is available here. The DraftKings Big Game Snackdown will stream live at 4:30pm ET on February 7, 2021, on DraftKings’ YouTube channel and Twitch stream.

The 8-minute, all-you-can-eat event will feature six of the nation’s top eaters. Foods in the steeplechase will include an eight-layer dip, pepperoni pizza, boneless wings, chili, a sub sandwich, cheese balls, pigs in a blanket and jalepeño poppers

In a groundbreaking undercard, Badlands Booker, the number-24-ranked eater in the world and the undisputed world chugging champion, will face off against the number-two chugger in the world in the first-ever Easy Cheese Spray Cheese Chugging Contest, in which competitors will empty canisters of Easy Cheese directly into their mouths. For purposes of this contest, MLE has broadened Easy Cheese’s official food designation from processed cheese snack to processed cheese snack and liquid.

“America has always been defined by innovation and reinvention, and Major League Eating is proud to play a small part in that legacy,” Barclay said.
