Darron Breeden Sets New 10-Minute Tamale Record!
10-01-2018
Lewisville, TX! Mark the date, place and time: On September 29, 2018, on the steps of City Hall in Lewisville, TX, at 1.48pm, Darron Breeden was declared to have eaten 70 two-ounce tamales in 10 minutes. In doing so, he was deemed the winner of the 2018 Western Days Festival World Tamale Eating Championship Presented By Market Street and earned his second world record-setting performance of his burgeoning career. His tamales title comes hot on the heels of his stellar performance in the Cheese Curd discipline some six weeks earlier.
This year’s Championship was contested over 10 minutes of competition for the first time ever. As a matter of course, a new 10-minute record in the tamale discipline was to be be set—that was unless, of course, the MLE emcee on duty was required to disqualify every contestant at the table. The cynical would say that the record was set by default. It was not. It was set by the grace of God. With this new record on the line, we stand in wonder and amazement at the long-form, 12-minute tamale-eating record on the books: The 102 tamales that Joey Chestnut ate over a dozen minutes in 2012. That record will stand until the last bird flaps its wings for the last time. Pour one out.
Miki Sudo, your 2015 Western Days Festival World Tamale Eating Champion, would have to settle for second, with an impressive 55.75 tamales in 10 minutes. Adrian Morgan rounded out the medal positions with 50.5. Others ate less but all gave their best account of themselves.
