An Indiana State Fair employee named Alexis, tasked with the crucial responsibility of in-contest ice-cream resupply, mentioned, sotto voce, to the emcee on duty at the three-minute mark with head nod toward Esper, “That dude is a machine.” Yes. He is fast, he is clean, he wastes no effort, and he’s . . . like Joey Chestnut? Not today he wasn’t, but that’s on Chestnut. The #1-ranked eater in the world remarked after the event that he struggled with rhythm and cleanliness; he incurred a debris penalty as a result. He would finish with 14.5 pints, half a pint shy of his personal best. Miki Sudo’s record of 16.5 pints of ice cream in six minutes withstood this afternoon.
