Krystal Announces Cash Purse for the Krystal Square Off IV Wolrd Hamburger Eating Championship
Chattanooga, Tenn. – At the 2007 Krystal Square Off World Hamburger Eating Championship this October, competitive eaters will be walking away from Chattanooga with more than just full stomachs. They will also be walking away with pockets full of some cold, hard cash as The Krystal Company announced today that it will award an unprecedented $35,000 in cash prizes to this year’s finalists. The prize purse is an increase from last year’s previously unmatched $30,000 and is double the amount awarded at the first Krystal Square Off in 2004. All 14 of the final contestants will receive a piece of the cash purse, with the increased money ensuring a larger payday for those finishing 4th through 14th place.
Like 2006’s championship, which was won by the current world-record holder Takeru Kobayashi with 97 Krystal hamburgers in eight minutes, the winner this year will receive a $10,000 cash prize along with the coveted Krystal Square Off World Champion's Belt and the Champion's Trophy made out of crystal. The runner-up and third place finishers will take home a paycheck of $7,500 and $3,500 respectively. On the line for the remaining finalists on are the following increased payouts: 4th - $2,300; 5th - $2,000; 6th - $1,800; 7th - $1,500; 8th - $1,300; 9th - $1,200; 10th - $1,100; 11th - $1,000; 12th - $700; 13th- $600 and 14th-$500.
Billed in its fourth year as the Krystal Square Off IV and annually drawing thousands of competitors and more than 100,000 spectators, the two-month long qualifying circuit and championship event will officially get underway on August 22, 2007, in Chattanooga, with a special Opening Ceremony and official “Lighting of the Grill.” The road to the top burger title will then journey through eight more cities across the South with each city sending its winner to the world championship final in Chattanooga. The Krystal Square Off is the only world hamburger-eating championship officially sanctioned by Major League Eating.
In addition to the increased cash purse, for the first time competitive eating fans and sports enthusiasts alike will be able to compete in a fantasy eating league, creating their own league and drafting a team of competitive eaters. Fans will also be able to witness and track every second of the hamburger-eating action via live webcasts at www.KrystalSquareOff.com and via instantaneous text messages sent directly to their mobile phones. Videos of each regional qualifier will also be available on-demand on the website.
