STONIE DETHRONES CHESTNUT AT THE NUGGET WORLD RIB EATING CHAMPIONSHIP
Matt “Megatoad” Stonie devours 10.5 pounds of ribs in 12 minutes; Joey Chestnut takes second with 9.75 pounds.
Reno/Sparks, NV – Matt “Megatoad” Stonie, the world’s number-one ranked competitive eater thrilled a capacity crowd by winning the 10th Annual Nugget World Rib-Eating Championship for the first time in his Major League Eating career. Stonie downed 10.5 pounds of ribs during the 12-minute contest, unseating longtime rib champion and number-two ranked eater Joey Chestnut and taking home the lion’s share of the $5,000 cash purse.
“Joey Chestnut has dominated this event for eight years out of the past nine, so to come here for the 10th annual Rib Eating Championship and take the title from him, it feels amazing” said Stonie.
Chestnut ate 9.75 pounds of ribs at the 10th annual contest, beating his own 2014 feat of 9.27 pounds.
“I was having trouble swallowing and I went to the water a lot more than I should have,” said Chestnut of his loss. “They were fast ribs. Yeah, he beat me.”
Number-four ranked competitive eater Miki Sudo took third place with 6.25 pounds, followed closely by fourth place winner and #35-ranked competitive eater, Lesley Ryder who ate 6.15 pounds of ribs.
Rich LeFevre took fifth place, eating 5 pounds during the contest.
The event kicks off the 27th annual Best in the West Nugget Rib Cook-Off in Sparks, Nevada. The six-day barbecue festival is held every Labor Day weekend, as 500,000 hungry visitors eat more than 241,000 pounds of ribs served up by 24 of the world’s most talented rib cookers.
