CHESTNUT SETS WORLD TURKEY-EATING RECORD WITH 9.35LB IN 10 MIN!
Here in America, the only thing we love more than turkey on Thanksgiving is a winner. And on November 22, 2014, at Foxwoods Resort Casino, Joey "Jaws" Chestnut ate 9.35lb of whole turkey meat off the bird for the gold. In doing so, he set a new world record, besting the previous mark of 5.25lb set in 2011 by Sonya Thomas—a 78.095238 percentage increase, which is a lot, even if the math is lost on you.
Major League Eating hosted the inaugural Foxwoods World Turkey-Eating Championship, a pre-Thanksgiving celebration of man and woman vs. bird, in which the best Major League Eaters on the planet squared off against whole turkeys in a battle of technique, speed, capacity and Thanksgiving spirit. The eaters were called, one by one, to the stage. The birds entered the area in procession, held aloft by the peerless Foxwoods banquet team. The crowd counted down from 10. And then it happened: White meat, dark meat, popes' noses, skin, carcass, bone and cartilege flew and the eaters grappled with the giant meal in front of them. Each eater battled a 22lb bird—enough for a 16 guests by polite standards or one top-ranked MLE eater.
Chestnut led throughout the event, with Matthew Stonie in second for the duration. Miki Sudo impressed with a strong display. But this event was vintage Chestnut—the hope of a nation distilled into the teeth of one. None would touch him today. None would come close.
