JOEY CHESTNUT SETS INAUGURAL PIEROGI-EATING RECORD WITH 165 PIEROGI IN 8 MINS!

No one knew how many pierogi Joey Chestnut could eat. Not even Joey Chestnut—the #1-ranked eater in the world had not seen a pierogi until the day before the Horseshoe World Pierogi Eating Championship. (Never seen a pierogi? Maybe it's a Bay Area thing. Still, weird.) The bond between the Greatest Eater Who Has Ever Lived and the Pierogi was formed quickly and decisively. Call it love at first sight, because 24 hours later Chestnut—still swooning after his first glance at a pierogi, no doubt—ate 165 of the things to set a new world record. It stands as Chestnut's 34th World Record, which is a World Record of World Records held by an individual, if you can handle that meta brain beatdown.

On this day—National Pierogi Day, of course—it was vintage Chestnut. Unrelenting. Powerful. Ice in the veins and death in the eyes. Chestnut feared falling behind to Matthew Stonie at the five-minute mark and made a tactical decision to ball six pierogi at a time, consuming the giant softball of cheese, potato and starch like air. Stonie did not break stride. He was smooth throughout and is clearly working on finding a groove and sticking with it. He should feel no shame in eating 162 pierogi in 10 minutes.

Once again, it was Chestnut vs Stonie. And once again it was one of them by a whisker. Keen observers of the sport will note that in the Gyoza discipline, Stonie ate 377 in 10 minutes to Chestnut's 384—Stonie ate 98.18% of Chestnut's total. In the pierogi discipline, the 165 to 162 margin means that Stonie ate 98.18% of Chestnut's total. The dumpling family, according to the data, yields consistent results between the two. Which is, Chestnut just getting over the line. So close, people.
