If he had lived in these softer times, President Kennedy would have bellowed this line and not the one about being from Berlin. That is because Cincinnati, OH, is the home of the World Bratwurst Eating Championship. Not Berlin. Not Köln. Not Bonn. Not Hamburg. Not even Stuttgart. It is Cincinnati and everybody knows it. For Cincinnati is home of Oktoberfest Zinzinnati: The world's premier celebration of German culture, cuisine, ale and all-around German Lebensfreude.
And on the Sunday afternoon of this year's festival, Major League Eaters will again return to the corner of Broadway and Fifth in downtown Zinzinnati to face down the mighty bratwurst in a 10-minute, bun-free chowdown challenge.
Last year, Joey Chestnut totally straight up owned 70 brats to set a new WR. Chestnut used a double-brat technique to stack up the numbers early in the event, the plates of five brats wiped clean of their bounty with every passing 30 seconds. It was not pretty but it was beautiful. Powerful. Like a Mahler symphony. Sudo played nice for second. Rabbit Morgan rabbited his way to third. Wild Bill came fourth.
Who shall reign this year? Can anyone seize the bratwurst title from Chestnut? Can you? Do you have what it takes—and it takes a lot—to stand at this table on this day and do what you do? This is the Oktoberfest Zinzinnati World Bratwurst-Eating Championship. In the crowd or at the table, don't you ever miss it!
This contest will take place at 5pm Eastern, on Sunday September 21, 2014 at Oktoberfest Zinzinnati, at the corner of 5th St and Broadway, in downtown Cincinnati, OH!
