CHESTNUT TRIUMPHANT IN BUFFALO WING CHAMPIONSHIP!
Revenge is a dish best served warm, tossed in butter and hot sauce and deep fried to a golden, earthy tang. Call it Joey Takes Buffalo—bang, bang, bang. No one else left standing. The Great One, the greatest eater who has ever lived, the one they call Jaws, the man from San Jose and now the Wizard of the Wing—Joey Chestnut straight up owned Buffalo's annual National Buffalo Wing Festival in 2014. (Well, at least the eating contest portions open to Major League Eaters thereof. And, to be honest, the actual ownership, in a titular legal sense, is another matter. It's a figure of speech.)
The US National Buffalo Wing-Eating Championship is a 12-minute all-you-can-eat battle of human vs fowl and it is a battle we must win. Chestnut did his part, downing 192 Buffalo-style chicken wings for the win. Adrian Morgan, always the Buffalo wing sauce-scented bridesmaid it would seem in wing-eating events, finished second to Joey with 146. He should feel no shame, nor should the rest of the field. To lose to Joey today was like being a gazelle or an impala on the great plains—even on the days when the feeding is good, soon ye shall be the hunted. It is destiny.
Hunted they were. Chestnut did not compete in the 2013 championship and he ate here with a grim determination and eyes that gave away nothing but spoke a book: "Try Me And You Shall Suffer" would have made a decent working title. There would be no repeat of the Ladies Nite in Buffalo 2013 podium, in which female MLE eaters went one, two, three for the first time ever at the event. No. Chestnut would not have it.
The event was broadcast live on ESPN3 and gave MLE and the great citizens of the great city of Buffalo the opportunity to celebrate the almighty chicken wing on this Labor Day Weekend. It was grand.
