MS MIKI SUDO CLAIMS FIRST OF TWO BUFFALO TITLES IN BUFFALO BOWL DISCIPLINE!
Major League Eating returned to Buffalo, NY, this Labor Day Weekend for another installment of The National Buffalo Wing Festival—a two-day celebration of all that is good about chicken wings and the great city of Buffalo, helmed by the Wing King himself, Mr Drew Cerza! The world's greatest eaters have long come to the 716 from far and wide to pray at the altar of the chicken wing. (Others, such as hometown hero "Buffalo" Jim Reeves have, admittedly, enjoyed a decidedly shorter commute.) This is a signature weekend on the MLE calendar, and a two-day battle of mind over stomach.
The first of the weekend's contests was the Buffalo Buffet Bowl and it belonged to MLE rookie sensation, Ms Miki Sudo of Las Vegas, NV. The rules are simple: Each eater starts with a five-pound spread of various Buffalo cuisine. Beef on weck. Pizza. Chicken tenders. Buffaloanian excellence all round. First to finish wins.
Sudo has quickly made one thing abundantly clear in her five months on the MLE circuit: She's fast and she has capacity. Which is bad news for those who dare to challenge her. Last year's winner, Joey Chestnut, simply could not match Sudo. (The 13.76 lb of rib meat he ate three days earlier in Sparks, NV, in sanctioned competition may have had something to do with it.) In many ways, Sudo's performance was Chestnut-esque—fast, smooth, relentless. Only more elegant. Regardless, he is not one for excuse making. He is not one for apology. He is one for revenge. All of which bodes well for a crushing rematch in 2014. Bring it.
