Joey Chestnut Vs. Joey’s All-Stars Fish Taco World Record Challenge

Location: Calgary, Alberta
Date: 08-09-2013
Winner: Joey Chestnut

JOEY CHESTNUT DOWNS 23 FISH TACOS IN 5 MINUTES, SETS WORLD RECORD, AMAZES CANADA, WORLD, SELF!

He is the man they call Jaws. He is the world's greatest eater. He is the greatest eater who has ever lived—and that is a matter of empirical fact, not empty editorializing for anyone who cares to check the facts. And Joey Chestnut has eaten all over the world—at Coney Island, on US bases in Guam, even the great state of Oregon. But until the evening of Friday August 9th, 2013, he had never eaten in an MLE-sanctioned event at half-time of a CFL game. And then he did. And he set a new World Record: 23 23 Joey's Seafood Restaurants Fish Tacos in five minutes.

He ate like a man possessed. Like the man we all know. Like the man who doesn't need other elite MLE talent to his left and right to push himself to new heights of excellent. (He sets his own bar, that Joey Chestnut.) And after five minutes came and went forever, 23 Joey's Seafood Restaurants Fish Tacos—a 6-ounce celebration of fish, tortilla, pico de gallo, chipotle mayo and cheese—disappeared into that place that so much food has before it. Into the gullet of The Man. (We'll do the math for you: that's 8.62 lb of food in five minutes.)

The record was set during the first-ever Joey’s Seafood Restaurants and Joey’s Urban Joey Chestnut Vs. Joey’s All-Stars Fish Taco World Record Challenge. At the half-time mark of the CFL’s week 7 Western Division matchup between the hometeam Calgary Stampeders and the visiting Saskatchewan Roughriders, Chestnut joined four-man amateur teams of Stamps fans and Riders fans on stage. The teams were battling each other for provincial pride. Chestnut was battling history. He ate 23. In the amateur battle, The Stampeders fans ate 21 collectively, while the Roughriders fans ate 15. Not inconsequentially, the footballing Stampeders went on to win the game, 42-27, no doubt inspired by the performance of their fans during this half-time event. The win handed the Riders their first loss of the 2013 season; Stamps RB Jon Cornish ran for four TDs in a career day.

The real winners though are the people of Canada: They are closer than anyone on the planet to a Joey's Seafood Restaurant or a Joey's Urban location. The fish tacos are out of this world, people. Do not deny yourself.
