Eater X reclaims crown at World Tamale Eating Championship
Tim "Eater X" Janus, the only two-time champion in the history of the World Tamale Eating Championship, edged Sonya "the Black Widow" Thomas by just three tamales to reclaim his crown in Lewisville, Texas on Saturday, September 25th.
Janus, ranked fifth in the world, consumed 59 tamales in 12 minutes. Thomas, ranked fourth, finished with 56 tamales. Although Janus' world record of 71 was never seriously challenged, he and Thomas did post the second- and third-highest totals in the history of the event. Thomas’ is a new world mark for a female eater.
The competition was organized by the Lewisville Convention and Visitors Bureau and held in conjunction with the Western Days festival in Old Town Lewisville. Dallas Tortilla & Tamale Factory in Lewisville provided the tamales for contest.
Adrian “the Rabbit” Morgan was third with 36 tamales edging #9-ranked Erik “the Red” Denmark (33) and local Major League Eater “Nasty” Nate Biller (32.5). Biller, a Frisco resident, was the highest-finishing Texas in the event.
For his efforts, Janus took home a $1,500 cash prize. Thomas won $1,000 for second place, Morgan won $500 for third and Denmark won $250 for fourth.
