UK Eating Championship

Location: Birmingham, England
Date: 05-28-2005
Winner: Rob Burns

The International Federation of Competitive Eating held the UK Eating Championship in Birmingham, England.

The 12-minute, all-you-can-eat contest, was open to all aspiring eating athletes 18 years of age or older.

Rob Burns, a diminutive first-time eater from Birmingham, England, won the UK Eating Championship by downing 18 pork pies in 12 minutes, just edging out Andrew Koceen of London, who consumed 17, and Irish oyster eating champion Jimmy Glackin, who placed third with 11.

Burns will represent Great Britain at the Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July International Hot Dog Eating Contest in New York City. The event took place at the Newark Showgrounds, 30 minutes from Nottingham. A crowd of nearly 500 cheered on the British gurgitators in the event.

The UK Eating Championship will be featured in a Channel 4 documentary on the fast-growing sport of eating.

“While the European Union has grown in political strength and stature during the past five years, it has fallen woefully behind in the competitive eating arena,” said IFOCE chair George Shea. “This is an opportunity for the UK to showcase its top athletic talent and get the UK back on the sporting map.”
