Drum Corps International World Peanut Butter and Jelly Eating Championship

Location: Buena Park, CA
Date: 08-08-2007
Winner: Pat Bertoletti

On Wednesday, August 8, the nation's finest Major League Eaters converged on Knott's Berry Farm, America's first theme park, to compete in the first-ever Drum Corps International World Peanut Butter and Jelly Eating Championship.

Patrick “P-Rock” Bertoletti solidified his reputation as the best sweets-eater in the known universe, downing 42 sandwiches in 10 minutes. A not-so-distant second went to Tim “Eater X” Janus, who knocked down 37.5, using an unprecedented milk-water dunking solution. Not far behind came the circuit’s grizzled veteran, Rich “The Locust” LeFevre, who ate 34. Erik “The Red” put down 20.

In a rather unfortunate turn of events, the eater known as El Toro suffered a reversal so dramatic it would’ve put Davey Hogan’s to shame.

Legendary Ron "the Optic" Koch was on hand as Special Guest Judge.

The “PB&J Fest” was created to celebrate the start of the 2007 Drum Corps International Summer Music Games World Championships at the Rose Bowl Stadium in Pasadena, California, which will take place Thursday August 9 through Saturday August 11th.

From modest beginnings more than three decades ago, Drum Corps International has developed into a powerful, nonprofit, global youth organization with far-reaching artistic, educational and organizational influence. Drum Corps International is now recognized as the world leader in producing and sanctioning competitive marching music and related stadium events for the world’s most elite and exclusive marching music ensembles.

Over the course of a typical season, top Drum Corps International units will feed their combined 5000 performers and staff a whopping 1.2 million meals on the Summer Music Games Tour, including 42,500 loaves of bread, 20,000 lbs. of peanut butter, and 25,000 lbs. of jelly--all washed down with 17,500 gallons of milk.

California's own Joey Chestnut was once in the marching band playing the trumpet, and his brother Paul was a member of the elite Blue Devils, who are up for the championship this year. Chestnut also has an affinity for sandwich competitions, holding records in horseshoe sandwiches (native to Illinois) and grilled cheese (47 in 10 minutes). PB&J should prove to be an exciting new challenge.

Registration for this event is now closed.
